Travel Tips

Travel -Tips

The British Virgin Islands are located in the Caribbean Sea 1100 miles southeast of Miami. Situated at 18.25N and 64.36 W, we are 90 miles east of San Juan, Puerto Rico and 70 miles northwest of St. Martin.

Airlines
San Juan, Puerto Rico is the main routing for passengers destined to the BVI. American Airlines
is the biggest carrier with ongoing service from there to Tortola with American Eagle. Several other airlines also fly the route and LIAT and Cape Air have service from San Juan to Tortola. The alternative route is to fly direct to St. Thomas and to then take the ferry to West End, Tortola. Please remember that the last ferry departs St. Thomas at about 4:30 pm so you need to arrive early enough to make your connection. We suggest that you contact Caribbean Travel at 1-800-327-5540 (Reference #1131) who are able to obtain excellent rates. For those of you arriving the day before the charter starts we can assist with hotel reservations or you can opt for a prior night sleepaboard subject to availability. Prior night sleepaboards cost 50% of the daily rate of your boat.

Immigration

Except for nationals of Canada and the USA, all visitors must have valid passports. All visitors must have a return or ongoing ticket.

Currency
US Dollar.

Climate
The climate in the British Virgin Islands stays relatively constant year round with temperatures ranging from 75-85 degrees. Transportation in and around our islands is frequently provided by small aircraft and ferries. These aircraft have limited luggage capacity, therefore, you should only pack what is necessary. Do not forget your camera, swimsuit, walking shoes, sandals, T-shirts, cap, sunglasses and sunscreen. Dress in the islands ranges from very casual to casually chic. Women will need to dress no more formal than skirt or shorts and top or summery dresses made of cotton for dinner and evening functions. Men may wish to pack sports coat and slacks as some of the more luxurious properties require this dress for dinner. In most establishments, however, shorts and T-shirts are acceptable.

Transfers
Our yacht docks at TMM( Tortola marine manegment). TMM provides taxi transfers to and from the airport or ferry dock to the marina only. If you are staying at either Marias by the Sea or Prospect Reef Resort at the beginning or end of your charter we will provide the transfers from the airport or ferry dock to these hotels, but you are responsible for the transfers from the hotels to the marina.

Airport Tax
There is a departure tax of US $15.00/person plus a $5 security fee.

Ferries
If you are coming through St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands then below is a list of the ferry schedules to help you plan your arrival. You can catch the ferry from downtown Charlotte Amalie or the Eastern end of St Thomas at Red Hook. It's always a good idea to check on the last ferry of the day as sometimes they can leave fairly early at around 430pm. There are three main ferry companies that run between St Thomas and Tortola and they are Smiths Ferries (the blue boat), Native Son (the green boat) or Tortola Fast Ferry (the catamaran).
